We are back in 2025!
Four Siblings is a land based art and research project. We come together to create an edible labyrinth in the shape of an artwork in the threshold of the city of Amsterdam. We want to create a sense of belonging to the earth we live, to the food we eat. We investigate collective ways of generating knowledge and make it as open source as possible.
We want to do so in a mutually supportive way; care for our bodies while we care for the land; bring back the biodiversity and seed resources, generate new local networks between artist, farmers, permaculturists, residents while learning by doing.
We take inspiration from the works of land artist Agnes Denes, whose ecological installation Wheatfield (1982) is an important frame of reference.
The initial project started as a queer-eco-feminist reasearch idea and a community garden initiated in 2018.
In 2019 we were in research and preparation time, seeking a piece of land.
In 2020, we had land but we had to rest due to Covid pandemic.
In 2021, finally the development of first public edition of Four Siblings (then Four Sisters) was funded by the Mondriaan Fund, the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) and the Stadsdeel Nieuw-West.
In 2022 we rested and conducted research.
In 2023, we made a new edition with new experiments: working with the wilderness. While we still work with the usual crops such as pumpkins, corn and potatoes, we are paying more attention to what is already there: the wild. This edition was supported by Fonds voor Nieuw West, Stadsdeel Nieuw-West, Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK) and Mondriaand Fonds together with all the wonderful donations received via VoorJeBuurt.
In In 2024 we were nomadic, conducting research and preparing for 2025.
We are available for workshops, local tours for plant knowledge & foraging in Nieuw West neigbourhood, lectures, visits and talks and games.
Four Siblings adheres to Fair Practice Code, Diversity and Inclusion Code and Governance Code Cultuur.
For our internal ground rules please see this page.
We do not tolerate racism, queerphobia and coercive behavior in a way that is non-negotiable.
